43% are actively trying to lose weight.
Obesity is a sensitive issue to preach on, so most churches avoid it completely, giving a friendly nod of support by allowing one of the nationally recognised slimming groups to use their premises!
But Church, do we really need to outsource our concerns over the obesity epidemic to the world systems of counting calories and following restrictive diets?
What if we combined the health-focused, community based concepts of a Slimming Club with an evangelism and discipleship program such as Alpha? This is the vision behind Weighting on God.
Our Vision
Weighting on God is based upon the core Biblical doctrines Christians are familiar with: repentance, faith, the Lordship of Christ, inner transformation through the power of the Holy Spirit, walking in obedience to God’s Word, the overcoming life, knowing our identity in Christ, renewing of the mind, and the healing of our emotions.
These truths are then applied to our relationship with food and eating. Recognising that we are temples of the Holy Spirit, we learn how to steward our bodies as ‘vessels unto honour’ that glorify our Creator. We are set free from a diet mentality and acquire the practical skills and wisdom needed to eat primarily for nourishment and to satisfy our physiological hunger.
It’s Better Together
Whilst Weighting on God can be used as an individual weight-management resource, it is ideal for small group study and, although overtly Christian, is also effective for lifestyle evangelism.
You don’t need to be an expert in health and nutrition to run this course. Leaders receive additional support materials to help deliver the course in a relaxed and stimulating way, where you can support one another in love.

The group course has changed my life. I feel so hopeful now, and folks are noticing the weight coming off, which is a great testimony to the power of God to transform lives. I am managing to lose weight with the help of God’s Holy Spirit dwelling inside this temple.
